Things I Know Since Turning 23

1. When people are inclined to do something nice for you, let them. These moments are rarely about you, but about honoring them.

2. Rainy days are better used to write, and to read, and for hot tomato soup. Like raindrops, thoughts fall deeper. That unless at night, they shouldn't be slept through.

3. You shouldn't underestimate the value of a simple life. Not every day is your graduation, or your wedding, or your birthday. That doesn't make those days any less valuable.

4. There is no middle ground in love. Either you do or you never did.

5. That it does no one any good to expect anyone to act the way you would. You're unique, your thoughts are unique, and your goals are unique.

6. Brown is just not a color that looks good on almost anyone.

7. You should always surround with people that are wiser than you. But for good measure, you should also throw in those who could use a little guidance. Put to use what you learn.

8. Relationships only look picture perfect from the outside. Get close enough and you'll always see cracks.

9. That passion and aspiration are always attractive in a man.

10. That no one cares if you're wearing makeup or not. And if anyone mentions it, they're probably shallow.

11. That the best things in life will always make you a little sweaty.

12. No one is ever going to please you entirely, and you're not going to ever please anyone entirely either. So you are left with…what? You get to be yourself.

13. That money always looks best in the bank.

14. Your body is a rarity, and a blessing and should never be taken for granted. So nourish it, exercise it, stretch it, use it.

15. The life-span of vegetables is really short. So when at hand, eat the damn vegetables.

16. Friendships don't always hold it together all the time. But that doesn't make them any less valuable, or any less important. Sometimes they are more like waves kissing a shoreline.

17. You should never underestimate the power of a good book to change your life, or change your perspective.

18. You can most likely judge the caliber of a person by what they decide to do every friday night.

19. The world doesn't need to know your every thought. You shouldn't need that to feel validated. It's great to have an actual relationship with yourself.

20. Surprising people at home should be preceded with caution.

21. I still don't understand why people smoke.

22. To really love is to set free.

23. There are consequences to every action. They are yours, you've earned it. And every step is precious.
